Rating details.The first thing I want to say is, I did not expect that much from this book. That said, it's not like I ever expect much from any book based on a video game, but I do like reading them for background information.

Before this, STO players only had The Path to included in the book's appendix to rely on for the story elements behind the game, and here's the problem - a series of events detailed impassively through a bunch of web pages just wasn't enough for me. This ultimately led me to pick up the book. Unlike other works of this genre, however, the story behind The Needs of the Many is told through a string of interviews, along with a handful of letters, news articles and other documents thrown in for good measure.

The overall format and tone of the book has been compared to the writing style employed in World War Z, the post-apocalyptic zombie novel. Knowing this beforehand wasn't a problem, but it did lead me to believe I would not be as drawn to the story as I would have been if the book had been done in a more traditional style.

I could not have been more wrong. Was the book a literary masterpiece? Of course not. But that's never the point when it comes to these kinds of books.

I wanted a fun read, and I got one. Each interview presented itself as a unique vignette, and while the main focus of the story remained on the events of the Undine War, I was not opposed to getting a look into the personal experiences and opinions of Jake and his interview subjects.

Were there moments where this made me feel like I was reading a current-day political commentary? Yes, I'll admit it felt like the author was using Jake as a proxy to communicate his socio-political views at times, but this to me is just par for the course. It's not like any of the Star Trek series have never been used to make strong and blunt comments on the major social issues of today. I thought I would be completely lost, but I was surprised to find that I wasn't. Maybe it was because I had little idea what was going on lorewise in the first place, so the book having no sense of chronology did not affect me as much.

After all, you can't technically be lost if you have no destination to begin with. CBS and Pocket Books are to be applauded for not only creating a first of its kind tie-in to the new Star Trek Online game, but to also offer a book in such an interesting format.

The book contains a series of interviews from many different perspectives on the war, from the front-line grunts to ivory tower academics. There are also interviews with some less well-known, but previously seen characters like Bruce Maddox from "Measure of a Man" and agents Lucsley and Dulmur from the Department of Temporal Investigations "Trials and Tribble-ations".

Yes she was, but Star Trek Onlineand therefore "Needs of the Many" exist in a bit of a continuity pretzel, especially for regular readers of the Star Trek novels. Although there is a nod to the pivotal Destiny series, STO and this book essentially ignore those events most notably the elimination of the Borg.

To make things even more complex, the game and the book do adhere to events of the "Star Trek Countdown" comic book prequel to the Star Trek movie. This means that Data is alive too. That means that within each of the interviews there is a lot of exposition going on. Along the way you learn much about the transforming big political picture of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, but also the events in the lives of some of our favorite heroes.

And for any Trek fan, that is a lot of fun. This is especially important for players of Star Trek Online, who learn much about how the shifting alliances have resulted into the Klingon and Federation factions we see in the game. But we also learn the very human toll the Undine War has had, with their pernicious infiltrations into all corners of the Federation and beyond.

However, all of that exposition often comes at the price of character. And with so many voices, Martin sometimes struggles with getting the feeling right for some of these well-known characters. Of course, we are meeting them at a later stage in their lives, but it is hard to buy that the Undine War has changed these characters so much. This was especially true with Worf and Garak, who both come off as borderline deranged.

And sometimes it appears that Martin will manipulate the spirit of a character just to make a political point, like having Vic Fontaine singing a civil rights song to celebrate holographic rights. But many of the characters ring true, such as the interviews with Seven, Janeway and Geordi. In the end, although it is overly long and a bit repetitive at times, "Needs of the Many" accomplishes its task well.

The reader gets fully briefed on the backstory for Star Trek Online and also picks up lots of easter eggs tied into actual missions from the game. The book is recommended to any Trek fan playing the game, or those considering the game.

If you have no interest in Star Trek Online"Needs of the Many" is a bit of a mixed bag, but still an interesting read. The unique format and diverse cast of characters is worth checking out for book readers who can handle a bit of divergence with their continuities. Martin talks about his new Star Trek Online book, and also reveals what he has coming up. The author says that he has already proposed a follow-up book tied to STO, but it would be "more of a traditional novel" as opposed to the interview style of "Needs of the Many".

He is located in the personnel section of the base, where players can purchase bridge officers and train them with skills. The final person the player needs to visit for the mission is the Assignment Officer. This was the one I had the most trouble finding.

You need the chief medical officer to fix your personnel. They make very little sense. A lot of my problem with it is the writing for the missions. If you need to speak with a diplomat or a negotiator on a ground mission, they are usually one of the very few people around you can talk to.

Being told to find one very specific person on Earth spacedock without instructions on where to look, is like being told to find one individual person in a shopping mall on the day after Christmas. The one that did won the right to be the title of this post.

I should have known there would be something not right with a mission named after the let down tie in book. This mission is designed to show the players how much easier it is to complete planetary aid missions when they come across one.

The problem is coming across one. Planetary aid missions are part of the exploration sectors of the game.

Star Trek Online Federation - Needs Of The Many - Part 9 Gameplay

You get a randomly selected mission. If you want to teach someone something, you eliminate as many random events as possible. This should be a short mission with a set location. I would love to see someone do the math to figure out what the chances are of getting a planetary aid mission. I hope it helps, because the last time I tried to do it I felt like the chances of finding an aid mission were around one percent.
