Milan Fashion Week F/W 2014 Highlights
Milan is the capital of Italy's Lombardy region, which reported 54 confirmed cases. Milan's mayor on Saturday shuttered public offices. But runway shows continued apace for their fourth day, with most of the fashion crowd taking an analytical attitude to the rapidly spiking infections. He added it was up to government officials or fashion houses themselves to decide if additional measures were needed. It was not clear if the other shows would go on as scheduled.
Several shows were also scheduled Monday morning, before the fashion world moves on to Paris, where shows start Monday afternoon. Armani was forced to show behind closed doors one other time, in Paris inwhen officials said there were insufficient safety exits inside a huge tent being used as the venue to allow the public to attend.
Only his team and one video camera was present, and a video of the show was later distributed to fashion editors. Armani later showed the entire collection in New York in protest, claiming that fashion world politics and not just safety concerns had led to the officials' call. On Saturday, MIDO, the world's largest eyewear industry fair, announced that it would postpone the gathering scheduled for Feb. With the evolution of the virus still uncertain, fashion houses remain worried about the longer-term economic impact.
Chinese consumers at home and abroad are responsible for one-third of global luxury sales. Giorgio Armani also expressed longer-term uncertainty. Armani said the challenge for businesses won't end when the virus stops spreading. The queen, the mother, the lover, the sage, the maiden, the huntress and the mystic.
Trousers were high-waisted, sometimes corseted and other times layered with a built-in side-cinched long skirt on top. Knitwear, worn perhaps as mini-dresses, came embroidered with exotic florals. Leather coats had a light feel and incorporated scarves. The design feature was repeated on sheer dresses and blazers, creating a dramatic effect. Now that we're more than halfway through fashion month, we've finally hit the final, homestretch of a weeks-long stint on all things Fall fashion.
Gucci started the week celebrating the industry tradition of throwing a fashion show, taking his audience on a behind-the-scenes journey on what the chaotic and creative process entails. It also seems like Prada is onto new trends, too, as the Italian fashion house invited TikTok star Charli D'Amelio as one of its front-row guests. Plenty of dance video content was made, of course.
And while Prada's TikTok nod might have caught some attention online, it was the luxury brand's last-minute press conference on Sunday, the final day of Milan Fashion Week, that truly set the industry buzzing as they planned their departures for Paris.
The news? Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons are joining forces as co-creative directors of the brand, set to debut their first collection in September. Milan sure did go out with a bang, didn't it? While the industry was contemplating the state of New York Fashion Week, Alessandro Michele was in Milan planning to celebrate the fashion show tradition.
The result was his Fall presentation, a behind-the-scenes take on the cyclical spectacle. Showgoers arrived through a makeshift backstage space as they witnessed models get prepped for hair and makeup. Once the audience took their seats, the models were on full display on a merry-go-round-like stage as they got dressed by members of Gucci's team in the newest collection. Moncler has been successfully banking on collaborations with its Genius project, working with designers across the fashion spectrum to apply their own take on the brand's classic puffer.
Rick Owens' custom tour bus — straight from Area 51 — was also on display. Speaking of collaborations, Emilio Pucci is applying the same technique to help revive the Italian fashion house. Not only did Kocher reinterpret the Pucci logo and monogram, but she added her signature designs to the mix, too, like lace with jersey and sportswear-inspired silhouettes.
Another social media famous teen has paired up with a major luxury brand. Of course, plenty of content was made, including a video of D'Amelio dancing to Avril Lavigne's "What The Hell," which, when we last checked, was already viewed more than 25 million times from her million-plus followers. When Vogue asked creative director Silvia Fendi if she was frustrated about sticking to sample-size models, she replied"Of course.
Especially because you talk to me and I am not really a prototype of that shape. So it's liberating for me to portray these clothes in a different way, on different sizes. From Numero 00 to Marco de Vincenzo, these emerging brands continue to knock down the tall walls of classic Italian fashion and question its old blueprints.
Yes, this season he might have included structured coats and blazers in his lineup, but his loose suit trousers, parkas, leopard print, and slouchy sweaters really dominated the show. Even ultra-cropped tops revealing the full torso made an appearance. On the more extremist side of this rebellion, Numero 00 looked to an apocalyptic future filled with tracksuits, oversize parkas, and a harness-like top that trekked across a runway filled with dead leaves.
United Standard followed that lead with a collection truly obsessed with street fashion: work jackets, tie-dye, and graphic sweaters galore. David Catalan kept the urban vibe alive through colorful jumpsuits and visually effective stripes. As mentioned earlier, a small group of English designers banded together to take part in reinventing the narrative around Italian design.
First and foremost, A-Cold-Wall put forward an incredibly cohesive collection filled with boxy, well-made shirts, wrap tunics, and patterned parkas. In showrooms coordinated by the British Fashion Council of London—based talent, Ahluwalia and Bethany Williams nodded at streetwear through their renditions of recycled athleticwear and patchwork, while Matteo Bigliardi, the one Italian designer mingling with his English counterparts, exhibited craftsmanship that was not only well done, but also sustainably made.
How exciting is it that designers whose home turf has long been dominated by classic, sometimes antiquated standards are striving for the new and the exciting? These young talents are allowing the fashion world to experience a fresh take on menswear that pays homage to the streets without forgetting heritage. The new koala bear backpack at Numero 00 is but a small reminder to a larger picture.
